Welcome to the Brownsdale Grace Gillette Public Library
The Brownsdale Grace Gillette Public Library serves the community of Brownsdale (Mower County, MN) as a branch of the Southeastern Libraries Cooperating (SELCO) network. We offer free access to books, media, and programs for all ages. As part of SELCO, Brownsdale patrons can request materials from libraries across Minnesota.
Our mission is “Where Resources Inspire and Opportunities Grow,” reflecting our commitment to Creativity, Knowledge, Community, and Service.
Library Staff
The library is led by Deb (Debara) Smith, our Library Director. Deb first became Brownsdale’s librarian in 2003 and has over 20 years of experience in library service.
She is assisted by Shelley Vogel, our part-time library assistant. A board of local volunteers (the Library Board of Trustees) helps guide the library’s direction; for many years the board was led by Grace Gillette (a 45-year schoolteacher) and the library is named in her honor.
Our History
Brownsdale’s library dates back to the 1970s, originally housed in the city clerk’s office. In the late 1990s, after the town built a new fire station, the vacated former fire hall (adjacent to City Hall) was renovated to serve as the library’s permanent home.
The city council approved this move, giving Brownsdale “a nice space” for its library. The library has grown steadily, celebrating decades of service and community support since its founding.
Our Mission
We strive to be a community hub “Where Resources Inspire and Opportunities Grow.”
Our core values are Creativity, Knowledge, Community, and Being of Service.
We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to explore our collection and participate in library programs.

Our Facilities
We are located at 103 East Main Street, Brownsdale, MN, inside the Brownsdale City Building. The library is housed in a sunny, south-facing room that used to be the town’s fire hall.
Natural light fills the room, and the walls are decorated with local art, including a colorful quilt made by a community member. The library offers comfortable reading spaces and a welcoming environment for all visitors.
